Editing, mixing, and mastering are three steps in the post-production phase, after you’ve recorded your podcast content. These terms get misused a lot, so let’s define them.
- Editing is the process of removing mistakes, adjusting pacing, rearranging content, cutting irrelevant content, and arranging all the different parts of your episode like intros, interviews, ads, sound effects, and more.
- Mixing is the process of “mixing” the sound together to make it sound well balanced, clear, and professional. Techniques like equalization, compression, and special effects, and much more help bring your individual voices and music to life.
- Mastering is the final step of the post-production process that focuses on setting the proper volume for your master audio file, ensuring the sound matches digital streaming standards (e.g. -16 LUFS), and exporting the final “master” MP3 file.
Each audio production service includes editing requests and revision requests, so what’s the difference?
Editing requests are the initial content edits you ask us to make when you submit your episode (e.g. remove 1:15 to 7:32).
Revision requests are content edits you ask our team to make after your episode has already been edited.
Each level of service comes with a different amount of edit and revision requests, which you can see above on this page.
Premium audio services and above are based on 60 minutes of RAW audio. Learn more about the audio services in our Service Detail page here.
