Your Personality is Key to a Strong Brand Identity
Crafting an Authentic Brand Identity for your Podcast

The most successful podcast marketing takes place long before you upload an episode. It happens somewhere between “I should start a podcast” and pressing record. In that vital planning stage, you should be considering more than simply “what should I talk about?” You need to invest some real time and thought into molding your brand identity. But be warned, it’s easy to spot a fake. The last thing you want to do is be untrue to yourself and cast a counterfeit vision. So today we’re going to direct you to some great resources for discovering more about yourself, learning how to put that knowledge to work for your brand and offer you a free brand brainstorming assessment tool you can use for yourself and others on your team.
There’s probably a lot more to you than even you realize! Uncovering deeper truths about who you are and what makes you tick will serve you in much greater ways than simply honing your brand. A simple Google search will offer you a multitude of ways to learn more about yourself, and feel free to explore whatever sounds appealing (this is all about you after all). But there are a couple of resources that we found very powerful in helping us go deeper into our personalities.
Resource 1: Meyers-Briggs
First of all, a classic personality test, Meyers-Briggs. Formally known as the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator, this test has been around since 1944 but it is still very popular and widely used. We recommend taking the official MBTI as it comes with lots of resources to help you learn more about your type. https://www.mbtionline.com/
Resource 2: Enneagram
Next up, the Enneagram. The Enneagram of Personality kinda feels like the super popular new kid at school. But it’s actually been around in its current form since the 1950s, and some argue it has roots going all the way back to the 4th century! If you know anything about personality tests, you know the Enneagram is super hot right now, but it’s not all hype and hot air. The Enneagram offers some truly unique insights into our personalities and helps us learn how to utilize our strengths and grow in our weaknesses. One of our favorite perks of the Enneagram assessment is that it breaks down your qualities into “resourceful” and “non-resourceful.” There are some free versions of this assessment online, but for best results, we recommend spending $10 and taking it here: https://www.wepss.com/
Now that you know some of the deeper currents of what makes you you, let’s back up and look at some surface-level traits that will have less influence on why you should have a brand and more influence on your what your brand looks and feels like. This is more of a self-powered assessment you can do on your own. It’s a perfect activity for a cozy spot in your local coffee shop. Open up a notebook or a word doc, ask yourself these five questions, and record your answers/musings.
The Fast Five: Brand Brainstorming Tool
1)I consider myself to be more:
2) I typically like to be:
3) I feel most comfortable when things are:
4) I am known for telling:
A Good Joke
A Straight Fact
5) My aesthetic is more:
Now let’s look at your answers. What inferences can we draw? How do your answers affect your brand and the production process of your podcast? If you’re more quirky, you should probably be looking for some fun, upbeat intro/outro music. If you like to be challenged, consider a more serious color palette in your artwork and a call to action in your episodes. Feel more comfortable when things are neat and tidy? Try sitting close to your mic for minimal room noise and keep your comments scripted. More of a straight fact kind of person? Take a journalistic slant to your podcast, presenting real-time truth about your topic. Prefer a modern aesthetic? Use sleek fonts and bold colors in your artwork and some chill electronic music in your intro.
Let yourself brainstorm your aesthetic preferences as you think about your answers. Scribble any influences or vibes that come to mind (ie. music, artists, podcasts, movies, fashion). These are the things that will help you feel like your creation is a reflection of you and not just an imitation of someone else. It will also help your audience know who you really are and make them more willing to listen. Like we said before, it’s easy to spot a fake.
Go to Work
Now that you have a clearer picture of who you are as a creative, it’s time to get down to business. Depending on your personality type, this may be the easiest or the most difficult step. For me (INFJ for those who are curious), I can dream and vision cast all day long. But getting the rubber to actually meet the road is a challenge for me. I’m put off by the tedious nature of what has to be done to make my vision a reality. So allow me to speak directly to those types for a moment—GET BUSY! IT’S WORTH IT! I can say from experience that a realized vision is so much more gratifying than one that lives only in your imagination. Podcasting, in particular, can be extra daunting if you have no sound or recording experience. Resonate has created several helpful resources to help you find the right gear and process for your budget and needs. We can also set up a consultation call to recommend the perfect setup and teach you how to use it.

But there’s more to your brand than just what you sound like. As you discovered in the assessment, you’ll need to curate the right artwork, fonts, colors, website, and music that represents your brand and your identity. I know that sounds like a lot, but you have the tools you need now! And like always, if you want some extra help with any of the above, the Resonate team is here for you!
Remember when I said the most important marketing happens long before you upload an episode? Well, if you have checked off all the boxes we’ve talked about, you’ve accomplished what most podcasters never will! You have crafted a brand and a podcast that is authentic. That word is overused at this point, but when it’s backed by blood, sweat, and tears, you’ve earned the right to use it! We listen to a lot of podcasts here at Resonate, and we know that the most successful shows didn’t climb the charts because they spent $1000 on Facebook ads or got a shoutout from an influencer. Their success is rooted in the thoughtful and deliberate production that grips the listener and keeps them coming back for more.
You’re podcasting because you have something to say. No one wants to hear you do an impression of another podcaster when you say it. They want to hear you do you. When you know what that looks like for your podcast, the Resonate team has the tools to work with every budget, every style, to get your authentic production out into the world. Let’s build something great together!
